Looking to build job experience? Forget internships, try this on for size

SEATTLE – -- Consider it boot camp for your career, even before you career starts. A local company is trying to bridge the gap between college graduation and that very first job.

Started by fortune 500 business leaders and education experts, KORU helps bridge the gap between graduation and the job interview.

Right now, ½ of the students who graduate college are either underemployed or unemployed. Often times, because they don’t have the skills employers are looking for.

“I wasn’t getting hired right out of WSU. So it was either stay at home and maybe get a job at McDonald’s or come to KORU and practice on myself and professionalism," one KORU student said.  “It’s very difficult to know from a resume what someone can do, when they just graduated from college; it doesn’t tell if you if they are going to work well in a teams, can you run a meeting.”

At KORU, it’s all about learning by doing.

Students who either just graduated or are going into their senior year spend 3 weeks in Seattle for career boot camp. They split into groups and are given a challenge from a real company. Together they tackle the challenge and eventually present their plan to fix it to real employees of the company.

KORU students come from all over the country and from all walks of life, but they are all driven to succeed. Each session is just over $2700; a tough sell for many college students struggling with debt.

But it’s something the co-founder says is worth every penny.

“We think about KORU as leveraging the investment you make in college. The different between starting your career at the right point from right in the beginning can be a multi-million dollar difference.

KORU does have scholarships available for students who qualify.
