Warmer temps stoke massive Carlton Complex Fire

OKANOGAN COUNTY -- The recent heatwave has stoked the giant Carlton Complex Fire, leading officials to call for caution.

The largest fire in the state's history has so far burned 250,806 acres and is 66 percent contained. Though fire lines are holding, officials worried things were "heating up a bit."

"(It's) Nothing to be alarmed about," the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office said. "Residents, though, should be aware that the fire is not yet out and the activity will still be noticeable."

Officials worried a heat wave pushing temperatures into the triple digits, combined with a forecast for dry lightning, could increase fire activity.

Lightning started the fire on July 14. Nearly 3,000 people are fighting the fire from the ground and the air.

Helicopters started the week by dumping water near the Pearrygin Lake area and other hot spots on the northeastern corner of the fire. They also spent time around the Gold Creek-McFarland area responding to citizen concern of smoke.
