Police: Man wrestles away guard's gun outside bank, shoots him, then himself

SEATTLE -- A man overpowered a security guard outside of a bank in Seattle's Central District, grabbed his gun, shot him and then shot himself Thursday morning, police said.

Both men were listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center Thursday afternoon.

The shooting took place outside the Bank of America at 2301 S. Jackson Street around 11 a.m., police said.

Seattle police said the 46-year-old security guard and the 30-year-old suspect met in the bank`s vestibule.

"The security guard did notice the individual that was there and made contact, at which time I'm sure that contact went very badly," Seattle police spokesman Pierre Davis said.

Police say they don't know whether the shooting was a result of a planned bank robbery or an attempted murder-suicide.

According to police, the suspect approached the security guard in the entryway of the bank. The two began to fight, and the  suspect grabbed the security guard's gun and shot him. Then he turned the gun on himself.

A security guard shot a man in the same area after a fight broke out in a shopping center parking lot last May.
