Washington woman lay injured in wreckage for 12 hours before hitchhiker hears cries for help

CANNON BEACH, Ore. -- A Vancouver, Wash., woman lay seriously injured in her car that had plunged down a heavily wooded embankment for nearly 12 hours, with her friend dead beside her, until a hitchhiker heard her desperate cries for help.
According to KPTV in Portland, the car driven by Gabriela Rayon, 21, of Vancouver, was heading south on Highway 101 when it left the road and plummeted down an embankment about a mile north of Cannon Beach at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Her passenger, Ruth Delgado, 23, of Los Angeles, died in the crash.
Rayon suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Portland, where she was listed in fair condition, KPTV said.
Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, the Oregon State Police said.
The car was not visible from the roadway. The cause of the crash is under investigation, KPTV said.
