18-year-old drowns in Mason County lake

SHELTON — An 18-year-old man reported missing near Lake Cushman while on a swimming trip was found drowned Saturday, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man was swimming alone at Skokomish Park while his friends were ashore around 12 p.m. Saturday. His friends called 911 after he hadn’t been spotted in 3o minutes.

Witnesses and emergency dive crews searched for the man, who was thought to be swimming in the swimming boundary area when he disappeared.

The sheriff’s office reported the man was found drowned around 3:50 p.m. in the swimming area by dive units.

His name will not be released until the Mason County Coroner’s Office can notify his next of kin.
