Partially blind deer euthanized after accidental rampage through furniture store

MODESTO, Calif -- Forever Yours Home Furnishing has been open just over a week, and they’ve already had one visitor they didn’t expect.

In this YouTube video shot by a store employee, a young male deer can be seen weaving in between furniture.

Store Manager Carlos Loredo tells FOX40 News a deer ran into the store from a back alley entrance.

“It was running everywhere. It was blind in one eye so it was just hopping everywhere and it was scared of everybody,” Loredo said.

Once police arrived, they tried, unsuccessfully, to corral the deer for nearly 45 minutes. The deer then hit a window.

Using a catch pole they typically use to control wild dogs, two officers were able to “hog tie” the deer, in the middle of the furniture store.

“It started panicking. It started throwing itself and started trying to get the cord out of it’s neck and started hitting it’s face and cutting itself – it cut its antler and then broke its own leg,” Loredo said.

Modesto Police say they tried calling animal control several times, but never got a response. They also confirmed an officer on scene who was familiar with hunting,  made the call to kill the injured deer with a knife.

“He is familiar with the most humane way to euthanize an animal so he just said he used a knife and that was the best course of action at the time,” Modesto Police Spokesperson Heather Graves said.
