It’s not just a pipe, anymore: Kids finding new ways to consume pot
SEATTLE — Now that recreation marijuana is legal in the state of Washington, many parents are concerned that pot will land in the hands of kids.
School officials say parents need to talk to their kids about the dangers of marijuana and need to have that conversation when kids are in elementary school.
“One of our first things is to make sure kids understand that it’s still illegal for them,” says Lisa Sharp with the Seattle Public School District.
“There’s a lot of confusion about what is legal and what is not,” says Sharp.
“We know there is a less perception of risk, increase in use and then tie that in with an increase in access,” says Sharp.
In a recent survey, the district found at a 1/3 of 12th graders had smoked marijuana in the last 30 days.
Now, the district is also seeing edibles and vaporizer pens on campus. Sharp is constantly training principals, nurses, teachers and parents about the new products on the market and what to look out for.
