Inslee unveils new clean water standards; Boeing says too strict

SEATTLE -- Gov. Jay Inslee unveiled new rules Wednesday to reduce pollution in the state`s waterways.

He said the new standards will help improve the health of Washington residents, who consume fish and shellfish harvested here.

Inslee said water quality standards have not changed since 1992 and don`t reflect new chemical and toxic threats.

"When we improve our health by reducing the toxins in the fish we eat and the water we drink and swim in, it helps all Washingtonians, not just those who happen to eat more fish," Inslee said.

Many in the business community were quick to respond to Inslee's plan. Boeing said the new standards are too strict and will be a "substantial detriment to Washington jobs and economic health."
