Search suspended for 11-year-old girl swept out to sea near Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Wash. -- The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Friday for a 11-year-old girl who was swept  out to sea while swimming near Long Beach on Thursday.

The Coast Guard, using helicopters and boats, conducted seven hours of searching, covering more than 59-square-miles, the Guard said.

“It’s always a difficult call to make when we suspend a search and rescue case, “ said Senior Chief Petty Officer Joseph Dalida, command center supervisor at Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Ore. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the missing girl during this difficult time.”

Officials rescued a 10-year-old boy from a rip current Thursday afternoon near Long Beach, but could not find his 11-year-old sister.

Officials told FOX 12 Oregon the girl was swimming with a 10-year-old boy at Bolstad Beach Approach when they got caught in a rip tide. The boy survived after being in the water for 30 minutes.  Police said that that the juveniles and parents are from Chimacum, Wash.

Police said the boy's face was just above the water when rescuers reached him. He was taken to the hospital. His condition has not been released.

Police told FOX 12 the children were at the beach with their mother and grandmother.
