Vancouver police officer shot, critically wounded; 2 suspects nabbed

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Two suspects are now in custody after a Vancouver police officer was shot multiple times Monday morning during a routine traffic stop, KPTV reports.

Police searched hours for the second suspect in the shooting that injured one officer. The suspect was caught around 2 p.m. Monday.  The officer who was shot was critically injured, according to Vancouver police. Officers said he suffered multiple gunshot wounds.  Neighbors who told KPTV they helped the officer when he was shot was wounded in the upper torso or neck.

According to KPTV, emergency crews were called to the scene of a shooting near Northeast 162nd Avenue and 34th Street around 11:30 a.m. According to the Columbian, officers stopped a Jeep Cherokee that was reported stolen. Dispatchers did not learn of the shooting until a passer by grabbed the radio and said the officer had been shot.

One possible suspect in the shooting was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, but officers searched for hours for a second suspect, KPTV reported. He was captured around 2 p.m.

Neighbors reported six to eight gunshots from the home.

As police deployed to the scene, a Vancouver police car struck a station wagon. Both vehicles suffered significant damage, but there were no major injuries.
