RENTON -- A boy believed to be about 17 was in critical condition Monday night after nearly drowning in Lake Washington off Gene Coulon Memorial Park, Renton Fire & Rescue said.

Another boy about the same age was also taken to the hospital, but he was in much better condition, said Renton Fire & Rescue spokesman Kevin Anderson.

He said the two were swimming in an area of the lake where there are no lifeguards. Witnesses said one started to experience trouble in the water, and the other tried to assist him. But when firefighters got there, the one boy had been under water for several minutes and was unconscious. After working on him several minutes, rescuers got a pulse and blood pressure readings and rushed him to Harborview Medical Center.

No other details were immediately available.
