SNOHOMISH COUNTY -- Three months after a massive mudslide killed 43 people near Oso, county officials banned new construction in the area for the next six months.

County leaders have been working on ways to protect the public since the landslide on March 22nd wiped out the Steelhead Haven neighborhood, covered Highway 530 and rerouted the north fork of the Stillaguamish River.

Several people testified Wednesday how the proposed changes would affect property owners and developers. Councilmembers listened to their concerns and then voted 4-1 to pass the construction ban.

The council did not act on another controversial proposal that would have halted construction in potential slide zones in all parts of Snohomish County.
