Semi-tractor trailer fire on I-5 snarls morning commute



FEDERAL WAY - An early morning collision between two semi-tractor trailers caused one of the big rigs to catch on fire, blocking three northbound lanes on Interstate 5 in Federal Way and causing long backups.

The fire inside the semi that was hauling disposable paper cups, happened just before 2 a.m. the Washington State Patrol reported.The collision between the semis happened just north of the Federal Way weigh scales, near Enchanted Parkway, WSP reported.

Q13 Fox News reporter Jeff Van Sant spoke to two men who witnessed the crash. The men said that the saw one semi merging onto I-5 from the weigh station, pulling in front of the other semi. The two semis collided and a fire broke out in one of the semis a few minutes later, the men told Q13 Fox News.

Both men help the semi truck driver get out of the cab of the truck. No injuries were immediatly reported.

The fire department was able to extinguish the fire and there were no major injuries reported.

As of 5:30am, traffic was moving on two northbound lanes of I-5, but the backup was seen in both directions, with as much as a six mile backup northbound.
