Father of accused Oregon school shooter 'horrified and distraught' after son's alleged crimes

Jared Padgett, a freshman at Reynolds High School, opened fire in the boys locker room, killing Emilio Hoffman, police said.

TROUTDALE, OR -- The father of a 15-year-old Reynolds High School student who opened fire and killed a classmate this week shared a sorrowful letter with FOX 12 on Friday.

Michael Padgett, father of Jared Padgett, wrote that he is "horrified and distraught" by the events that took place Tuesday morning, when his son shot and killed 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman in the boys locker room.

The following is the full letter from Michael Padgett:

I, Michael Padgett and my ex-wife Kristina, are grieved in our hearts for the tragic event that involved our beloved son Jared at Reynolds High School. We are finding it very difficult to put into words our state of mind and emotions.

During the investigation, still ongoing, we have been fully cooperative with the police taskforce. There are no words to describe the feelings we felt when we realized that our son might be involved.

Through the interviewing process, with information being disclosed by both parties, we found ourselves deeply confused and shocked by the information delivered to us by the investigation team.

We are deeply sorrowful for the family of Emilio Hoffman and share their pain, heartache, and grief, for the loss of their oldest son and brother of the family. We give our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the family, friends and the entire community and you have our sincerest apology.

We also apologize to Coach Rispler, for his injury caused by Jared.

We are at a loss as to how and why this tragedy unfolded. Our family does not condone and has never promoted violence or hatred toward anyone. The values that we have taught our children are love in Jesus Christ, compassion, forgiveness, and patience. These were all natural attributes we observed within Jared daily. Knowing that these are the values that we have taught our children, we are horrified and distraught by the actions perpetrated by our son.

Again we want to express our condolences to the Hoffman family, Coach Rispler and the greater Reynolds High School family.

The letter was delivered to the FOX 12 newsroom in Portland on Friday afternoon.
