NTSB releases preliminary report on Skagit River Bridge collapse

MOUNT VERNON -- The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on last year's Skagit River Bridge collapse.

Many of the documents released are related to the investigation itself without analysis of the probably cause.

According to the report, the driver said he felt crowded by another car, so he switched lanes -- and that is when the truck hit one of the trusses.

The report indicates high clearances on the bridge were sub-standard.

Last May, a span of the bridge collapsed -- sending two cars plunging into the Skagit River.

The top of an oversized load collided with a brace on the right side of the bridge. Investigators said that affected the bridge's load-bearing capabilities and ultimately the collapse of the northern span of the bridge.

The NTSB's final report will be released later this summer.
