NEW YORK -- Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman beat out Panthers QB Cam Newton and will be on the cover of the Madden NFL 15 video game, which goes on sale in August,  it was announced Friday.

"Winning the cover is a kid's dream come true," Sherman said, according to ESPN.com. "I would never be in this position without my fellow Legion of Boom members and teammates."

Sherman and Newton were the finalists in the fan voting at ESPN.com.  With more than 661,400 votes cast by fans in the Sherman/Newton contest, Sherman took 56% of the vote to Newton's 44%.

Sherman becomes the second Seahawk to be on a Madden cover. Running back Shaun Alexander was on it in 2007.

Many athletes who have graced the cover of the Madden NFL games have had bad seasons or injuries, prompting some NFL fans to believe it's a curse.

"I don't believe in curses," Sherman said, "I believe in God."

Sherman tweeted one of the covers below and added, "It's official. #LOB & #Seahawks covering #Madden15! Thanks for all the support, 12s."
