Seattle woman dies on Grand Canyon rafting trip

FLAGSTAFF -- Investigators are trying to determine exactly why a 54-year-old Seattle woman died while on a Grand Canyon rafting trip Wednesday.
According to the National Park Service, 54-year-old Kathy Newman of Seattle was part of a seven-day commercial river trip on the Colorado River that went through the Grand Canyon. The group was on day five of the trip when Newman fell in and out of consciousness from an apparent allergic reaction at river mile 168.
Members of her group used a satellite phone to call for help, and a responding helicopter provided life support. However, the woman could not be resuscitated and died.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
