A soldier's special gift for family who lost so much in mudslide

ARLINGTON, Wash. -- Jonielle Spillers lost three children and her husband in the March 22 mudslide.

“When I think of (2-year-old) Brooke, I don't want to think of the last time I saw her,” Spillers said.

Sgt. Jerry Rodriguez is the kind of soldier who goes above and beyond the call of duty

“It’s tough to go out there and do your job when it’s something like this,” he said.

Jerry and his unit recovered the bodies of little Brooke Spillers and her father, Billy, a Navy officer.

Jonielle Spillers not only lost her daughter Brooke and husband Billy, but also her daughter Kaylee and son Jojo.

Her 4-year-old son, Jacob, was rescued by helicopter on the day of the slide.

Rodriguez and his soldiers did not come empty-handed to meet Jonielle.

He had special bracelets made in honor of the Spillers.

One for each of the first-responders -- and a set for Jonielle and Jacob..

“She does have something that is tangible for her that she can look at and always have with her,” Rodriguez said.

It's not just a band -- it's a bond.
