PUYALLUP — A Puyallup woman who saved her son seconds before a home explosion is being called ‘Superwoman’ by firefighters. But Mindie Sayers says she’s far from brave, she just did what any mother would have done to save their child.

“You could smell it, you could hear it, was thick, black smoke through everything,” Sayers said Wednesday.

The smoke came out of nowhere and Sayers was trapped in the bedroom with her 2-year-old son.

“It just sounded like a roaring fire,” Sayers said.

Hoping to buy more time to escape, she shut the bedroom door and ran toward the window.

“I opened it up, kicked the screen out, threw him out, threw my cellphone and jumped out the window. About two to three seconds later, there was a huge explosion,” Sayers said.

The problem was a leaking oxygen tank. Investigators say it’s possible a remote control toy car found next to it could have sparked the flames. The oxygen tanks were recently set up for their baby girl, Abigail, who has severe brain damage. She’s been at Seattle Children’s Hospital since she was born three months premature.

“The right side of her brain is completely gone, but she still smiles and she recognizes me,” Sayers said.

Abigail was supposed to come home from the hospital on Wednesday but the explosion the day before destroyed most of the house and the smoke ruined the nursery.

“We have nowhere to live. We have nothing for her, so it’s really hard,” Sayers said.

After the interview with the couple, Q13 Fox News was notified of Abigail’s death. The father says her heart gave out and she died Wednesday night at the hospital.

The family is in financial trouble. If you would like to donate to the Sayers, you can go to this link.

How can you be a 'Hero', when all you did was mitigate the damages caused by your own neglect?

Oxygen tanks have numerous warnings on them, as they are a hazard.

    • Faith

Actually it was the neglect of the company that delivered it, there was absolutely no way you can hear, see smell, or know a tank is leaking. This is my family you are talking about, and my aunt and cousin were seconds away from losing their lives and the day after this aired they lost their baby Abigail. Please keep your selfish ignorant comments to yourself.

  • Christina Turner

Mindie, I am one of your neighbors and I want to help you in anyway I can. Cloths food etc. I shared your link to my Facebook and I have faith that we can all come together and help you in anyway we can <3 God Bless you and your family!

  • Lindsey

Please be in prayer for this family. They belong to our church & not only did they lose their house, but their sweet baby Abi went home to Jesus last night.

  • Candace

Thank you Wanda for setting this up. My family will donate. I know sweet Abigail is with The Lord. We will pray for her family at this difficult time. We all need to support this family right now, instead of placing blame.

  • Jeannette

My heart goes out to you Chris & Mindy, I'm sorry for your loss. I have lost a child and grandchild, please don't forget how bad the other is hurting at times like these make sure you tell each other how much you love each other and your children. Bless you both, will keep you in our prayers

  • Justin

Why was their financial hardships an issue…something is fishy. Hate to be THAT guy but I'm honestly havin thoughts of Jean-Bennet Ramsey/Susan Smith right now…strike me dead if Im wrong, but….I kinda think we'll see more of this story as days go by.

    • Faith

      Hi Justin,
This was actually my aunt and uncle. My aunt lost her job the week before all of this, however, she did not want that shared. On top of the bills of having a child in the hospital for an entire year, and having their house burn down, & paying for a funeral for their daughter, finances are a little low. Bugs me, that someone could look for something negative in a persons life, when they've lost nearly everything.

      • Wanda ODell

        Well said Faith.
As for Justin's comment, I can't begin to see a link between Jean-Bennet / Susan Smith and this story. Abigail has spent all but a few days of her life in the hospital. She died from complications because she was born 14 weeks EARLY. YOU ARE WRONG. There is nothing fishy about this story.

  • tlee

I suspect by now that you have been struck dead and won't have the opportunity to read this. if you hate to be this guy then change your ways, it is not necessary to "be" that guy. This family is grieving, this family is in shock. Their baby girl died at Seattle Children's Hospital under the care of doctors and nurses that have tended to her, her whole life. The oxygen tank that exploded was defective and delivered the day before it blew up. The financial consequences of all this have been huge to a family that lives paycheck to paycheck. I am sorry that there are people like you that people like this have to contend with as they go through their suffering. I hope to God that you never have to encounter people like you at the lowest point in your life.

    • Slam1263

Too bad you fell for her lies.

I am forwarding this to all of O2 providers, maybe they can sue you for slander, seeing how you are being less than honest.

Does it just run in your family, or did she really sucker every one that much?

I am thinking your God likes me better, at least I am a honest a$$ hole.

    • yucking

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You're the idiot, and the bad speller Justin was right (but no, JonBenet's parents did not kill her, Justin!). hahahaha!!!!

post a rebuttal to your pathetic post, tlee

  • tlee

To those of you who have shown such love and support to this grieving family, I applaud you' and pray that God will Bless you and provide you comfort. Thank you for your kindness. Mom to the family

This woman is no supermom or superwoman… she is a criminal who was recently suspended from practicing nursing after admitting to illegally prescribing herself medications and falsifying patients’ records as well as falsifying an application for her husband to obtain financial assistance from a Lance Armstrong charity for a disease he doesn’t have… taking that money from those who truly need and deserve it.

She defrauded her employer, illegally obtained and took controlled drugs (while pregnant!), and was punished by the State of Washington as a result.

“In September 2013 the Nursing Commission charged registered nurse Melinda Sayers (RN60209905) with unprofessional conduct. Sayers allegedly falsified her husband’s application for a financial assistance program, including filling out a physician’s exam form and using a physician’s approval stamp to authenticate it. Sayers allegedly filled prescriptions for herself without a physician’s approval. Charges also say she falsified patient records, admitted it, and resigned when questioned about it. Employees who cleaned out her office allegedly found a signature stamp belonging to a physician assistant who hadn’t given Sayers permission to use it.”

This is all publicly available knowledge – check it out here: http://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/1500/Ne

If you want more details, go to https://fortress.wa.gov/doh/providercredentialsea… and search for her Registered Nurse License Number 60209905. You will see that she has been suspended and all the charges she admitted to.

Anyone who has donated money to this family is doing nothing but fueling a drug addiction. They are playing you all for fools. All the money collected for them should be donated back to the Lance Armstrong charity and to help addicts of prescription drugs.

Some people just make me shake my head, and yes you are one of those people. Is it really your place to sit in judgment of others? Never mind the issue of your 'facts' being incorrect & written through your 'opinion.' Opinions are not fact, they are just that, opinions. I truly hope you find something more valuable to do with your time than make defaming & slanderous accusations against my sister. I believe that I speak for many….we love her & her family….<3

  • hatetosayurright

Wow…The very 1st. Comment was accurate she did cause the explosion and the guy who said strike me dead is still here and alive way to call Out a person….w

    • Slam1263

I only thought she was negligent in handling the O2 bottles.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think she was an admitted arsonist.

I really hope her family does the right thing, and returns the money.

Have the Dad email me his resume, if he is clean and sober, and I'll send it out on my own dime to help him get a job. Things are tough out there, and it appears he, and his son, are a victim in this.

This is so hilarious!!!! Suckers actually donated money to this woman? And this site actually gave them the means to do so!!!. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! I am falling down laughing at the posts about prayer and god and this "heroic" person. HAHAHAHA!!!!!! She did have some time to spend the donations before, duh, investigators figured out who started the fire!. SOOOOOO FUNNY!
