Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has called for prayers for the Oso (Washington) landslide victims.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement in Nevada today, appealed to the Hindu community to hold special prayer sessions in Hindu temples all over USA.

Rajan Zed, expressing deep sympathies, noted: Hearts and thoughts of Hindu community of USA go to the victims’ families and loved ones, injured, rescuers and relief workers. May God grant them strength, courage, comfort, and assistance. It was a highly tragic and difficult time for them, Zed added.

Zed further said that he was full of sorrow for this tragedy and urged other religious leaders of USA to join him in prayers. It was a heartbreaking incident, Zed stated.

This March 22 mudslide has reportedly claimed 14 lives and 176 people potentially remain unaccounted for near the town of Oso, about 55 miles northeast of Seattle in the state of Washington. Emergency officials fear that death toll might rise.

From Northwest Insurance Council:

If you live in a high-risk area, there are several things you can do to protect yourself from landslides. NW Insurance Council offers the following tips:

-Create a family evacuation plan.

-Learn and recognize early landslide warning signs such as: doors or windows that stick or jam, new cracks in plaster, tile, bricks or foundations, broken underground utility lines and bulging ground at the base of a slope.

-Build retaining walls and install flexible pipe fitting to avoid gas or water leaks.

-Maintain a complete inventory of all your possessions, including photographs, receipts and serial numbers. NW Insurance Council offers free downloadable Home Inventory Software from the Insurance Information Institute.

-Damage to vehicles caused by landslide is covered if the owner has chosen optional Comprehensive Coverage in the auto policy.

-Personal contents inside a vehicle that are damaged by a landslide are covered under standard Homeowners or Renters insurance.

-If you aren’t sure what’s covered or have questions regarding your policy, contact your agent or insurance company.

From Governor Inslee’s office:

Gov. Jay Inslee said he received assurance from FEMA this morning that the federal government will be issuing a limited emergency declaration for direct federal assistance to assist in the response to the Oso mudslide. FEMA Regional Administrator Kenneth Murphy told the governor in a phone call that he was providing a “verbal emergency declaration” that will allow for immediate federal assistance.

Assistance will include an incident support team, program specialists, and an Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT).

“I want to thank Mr. Murphy for this quick response to the needs of a community devastated by last week’s mudslide. This was a priority for the state and our Congressional delegation and means we will receive immediate assistance from specialists and clears the way for more aid in search and rescue, recovery and rebuilding.”

When the Mountain Loop Highway out of Darrington opens, residents will still see a long commute west.

Right now, drivers from Darrington are forced to take Highway 530 North to SR 20, adding about an hour onto the commute from Darrington to Arlington.

Opening the Mountain Loop Highway doesn’t help with that commute, but will allow residents to travel south quicker, with a commute to Marysville about 2 hours and 15 minutes. That’s about a half an hour longer than if drivers were able to take 530 all the way.

This quote from Robin Youngblood given Saturday is quite haunting. “I heard this roar and it was huge and I’ve never heard anything like that and I looked out the window and I saw this huge wall of mud. It must have been 20 feet tall and the next thing I knew it hit the house.”
