Tanker truck overturns onto car, killing one

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - The northbound lanes of I-5 are closed this morning, after a fatal accident involving a tanker truck carrying liquid nitrogen.

Washington State Patrol deputies say the accident happened around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night near 228th Street.

The driver of the truck says the car was trying to pass him, when it lost control, striking the barrier and then swerving into the semi.  The force of the collision caused the tanker to overturn onto the car.

Troopers say the driver of the car was killed.  The driver of the tanker truck was not injured.

Hazmat crews responded to the scene to unload the liquid nitrogen from the tanker, but say none actually leaked from the truck.

Crews are now working on righting the tanker and towing it away.

There is no word on when the northbound lanes will reopen to traffic.
