Highway empty after major rock slide near Hood River

HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A rock slide was blocking both eastbound and one westbound lane of Interstate 84, near Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge Thursday morning.

The rock slide happened Wednesday night, just west of Hood River, near milepost 61.

Authorities say the eastern hillside gave way, sending rocks down the slope and pushing the jersey barrier into the westbound lanes.

In response, Oregon's Department of Transportation to shut down all eastbound lanes of I-84 at Troutdale. Westbound traffic is still able to get through though going is reportedly slow.

A transportation spokesperson said the highway is expected to remain closed through today, as crews work to clear the mess.

No injuries  have been reported.
