GM John Schneider on building the Seahawks team

RENTON, Wash. -- Seahawks General Manager John Schneider, widely credited with turning the Seattle franchise into a powerhouse, said Tuesday he is not the composed wheeler-dealer on game days that people might imagine.

"Pregame, I'm a mess," Schneider said, adding that all he can think is, "Boy, I hope this goes well."

Schneider disclosed that when he was contacted by the Seahawks about the possibility of being hired as general manager, he put together a long list of coaching possibilities to mention for his interview. When contacted next, he was told that Pete Carroll had been hired from USC to coach the Seahawks, and Schneider said he had to tear out a major part of his interview notes at that point.

He said he wasn't thinking about a certain number of players that would eventually be replaced on the team.  "When making transactions, you're just plugging away," he said.

He said he was very high on Russell Wilson before he drafted him. "Nothing was ever fake with him," Schneider said of Wilson.

Seahawks' fans shouldn't be concerned about complacency on the part of Schneider in continuing to build the team.

"We're going to push the envelope every way we can," he said.
