Up to 30 Camano Island homes evacuated after chlorine leak

CAMANO ISLAND, Wash. -- About 25 to 30 homes in the southwestern part of Camano Island were evacuated as a precautionary move Tuesday night when a 25-gallon tank of chlorine in the back of a pickup truck began leaking and sent up a cloud of gas, the Island County Sheriff's Office said.

The resident of the home where the pickup was parked called police just after 8 p.m. to report a white cloud of gas from the chlorine.  One deputy who responded to the call was taken to the hospital as a precautionary move after inhaling the fumes, but the sheriff's office said he was expected to be fine.

The sheriff's said they expected an all-clear to be given around midnight, allowing residents to return to their homes.
