Teenager's glasses deflect bullet in drive-by shooting

SEATTLE - A Seattle teenager's life may have been saved by the glasses that she was wearing.  Seattle police said that the 16-year old girl was lying on a couch Saturday night when gunfire erupted outside her home.  Multiple gunshots were fired in the apparent drive-by shooting.  One of the bullets struck the teenager in the face, police said, but the bullet that hit her was apparently deflected by the girl's eyeglasses.

Police said that the gunfire broke out just around 9:40 p.m. outside the home in the 5400 block of South Roxbury Street.  The gunfire may have come from individuals inside a dark colored sedan, who drove by the house, firing several rounds.  Several of the gun shots  went through the walls and the front window, police said.

The teen victim was struck by a single bullet in the bridge of her glasses, breaking them.  Amazingly the girl was not seriously hurt. Police responded quickly and the girl was taken to the hospital; she was reportedly alert and conscious, police said.

Police searched, but could not find the suspect vehicle.  Detectives from the Gang Unit responded and took over the investigation.  Police think that the residence may have been targeted but that girl was not the intended target.
