One in three Seattle residents volunteer

SEATTLE - Seattle ranks #4 in the country when it comes to volunteering, with one in three Seattle metro area residents offering their time in 2012.

That's according to the annual "Volunteering and Civic Life in America" report released Monday by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The report found that 34-percent of Seattle residents volunteered in 2012.  In total, nearly 994,000 volunteers gave 116.3 million hours of service worth an estimated $2.6 billion.

Additionally, Washington as a whole ranked #9, with nearly 35-percent of residents volunteering statewide.

"The people of the greater Seattle area should be proud of their strong leadership in volunteering," said Wendy Sepencer, CEO of CNCS. "Volunteers enrich our communities and keep our nation strong."

Nationwide, one in four adults volunteered in 2012.
