seniorsSEATTLE — As you being to prepare for guests this holiday season, experts say there are a number of dangers hidden in plain sight throughout your house that could seriously injure elderly family members.

Experts from Senior Helpers in Kent say the number one emergency call during the holidays isn’t from a heart attack or health condition but from a serious fall that caused injury.

Your home is foreign territory to elderly guests and it is easy for them to get hurt. Your home should  have good lighting in every room so guests can see. Stairs should be marked with brightly colored tape and hand rails should be sturdy.

Carpets should not have holes or snags and throw rugs should be removed so friends and family members do not trip.

Experts say it’s a good idea to keep emergency phone numbers out in the open and handy for anyone to access.
