Waitress explains what tipped her off to soldier accused of child rape

LAKEWOOD — Kelli Attinello, a waitress at Kimberly’s Cafe in Lakewood, said Tuesday she thought something wasn’t right when she was serving a 47-year-old man sitting with a young teenage girl.

“You can tell when a father is holding his daughter’s hand,” Attinello said. “I saw a very young, innocent girl that just did not know any better.

“He was holding one hand and rubbing the top of her hand with the other hand. That’s when i knew this guy was with this girl romantically. I could not believe that,” she said.

Attinello called the police, who showed up on Saturday and arrested the man, Glen Winans, 47, of Lakewood — a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier just back from Afghanistan.  The girl, from Kelso, was 13.

On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of child rape and has denied having sexual relations with the girl. He’s being held in the Pierce County Jail on $100,000 bail.

According to prosecutors, Winans allegedly started courting the youngster on a website called meetme.com while he was stationed in Afghanistan. When he got back to JBLM, court papers say he drove to Kelso to meet the girl at her home. Police say Winans took her to a movie and then had sex with her for the first time.

Investigators said the girl spent the night with him Friday at his home in Lakewood and then Saturday morning the two walked into Kimberly’s Café.

Child safety expert Kim Estes said smartphones allows kids to access anything and everything on the Web.

“They’re really giving them unfettered access to the Internet and to these sites,” Estes said. “Kids are looking at these sites on the school bus, looking at porn, hooking up with people online in these chat sites.”

And new chat sites pop up all the time. Estes warned that predators know exactly where to find vulnerable kids and that parents have the best chance to protect them.

“I think you can catch a lot of it before it goes too far, before they’re meeting somebody offline. Before they’re connecting with some stranger they’ve met that’s driving 500 miles to pick them up and take them to a truck stop,” Estes said.

Attinello said she’s not a hero for calling the cops and just hopes that the girl can get past this.

“I hope her parents get her all the help she needs,” Attinello said.

Estes said parents should add monitoring software to any computer, tablet or smartphone your kids have access to, and don’t be afraid to snoop around to see what they’re up to.

ummm…Where were here parents? She spent the night with this dude. They didn't think to ask where she was going or what she was doing? Yes, I know children lie, but that's why you as the PARENT, should be monitoring their internet use. Too many kids are getting bullied, kidnapped, etc. from sites like facebook!!

It takes a village to raise a child. Too many of us don't want to get involved. Thank heaven Kelli didn't feel that way. It only takes a moment to make a difference in a child's life.

I can half way under stand this in the Middle East where most men can't satisfy (wait they butcher and mutilate women so bad example) let's try this again men that go for kids are total sickos that should have a certain pair of organs removed… I really can't understand guys like this at just over 40 I think of any woman less than her mid 30's to be to young, but then I consider these guys in 40, 50+ range ( I am talking particularly about these movie producers and directors )that go for the 18 or 16(in states where 16 is legal ) to be major sickos ..

I am waiting for the rest of the story. You have to be a specific age to use that website he met the girl on, as per its site requirements, so she clearly lied. We do not know what this girl looks like, and we do not know what she has told him as to her age. As someone else said, where were her parents? Obviously the girl has to have some knowledge of what she was doing if she lied about her age on a dating website. I cannot condemn the guy without knowing the full story, and I refuse to automatically call this girl a victim when she was purposely lying, to some degree, about her age. Perhaps before this man gets brought up on charges, her parents should first be held accountable. Because of the age of the girl, I am sure we'll never know the whole story. I really detest sensationalism and half-reporting.

you're blaming a 13 year old child???? SERIOUSLY? Children do not have the capacity to make sound judgement in situations like this. This scum of a human being took advantage, he is a f****** ADULT, 47 yrs old, and even if he thought she was of age, when he met her in person it would have been obvious. I will never understand people who defend abusers.

He's the adult. He is supposed to know better. Statutory rape laws exist because we know children below certain ages are not responsible enough to make decisions for themselves and therefore they deserve society's protection. Her parents certainly may have been neglectful, but in the end if this man had acted lawfully and morally, the child may not have been in this situation. Parents absolutely should educate their children about appropriate sexual conduct – whether male or female, so that the girl would know how to act responsibly on and off the internet, and maybe, just maybe the man would not have behaved the way he did.

It doesn't matter if she lied, it is illegal for an adult to have sexual intercourse with a minor child in the United States even if she looks 35! She is 13 and he is 47. No excuse!
