Homeowner near Gig Harbor shoots man allegedly trying to enter his home

GIG HARBOR -- A homeowner standing outside his house shot a man in the back who tried to enter his house Thursday after the man reportedly ignored warnings not to go in, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said.

The wounded man was taken to the hospital, but his condition was not immediately available. The unidentified homeowner was not arrested.

Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer reported that the homeowner said the man was a stranger and that he drove up to his home in the 5700 block of Ray Nash Drive Northwest in a black pickup truck and began to approach the door. The homeowner said he went out armed with a handgun and asked him what he wanted.

According to Troyer, the stranger ignored the homeowner's questions and warnings not to try to enter his home, where his wife and teenage children were, and, when the stranger did try to enter the home, the homeowner fired, striking him in the back.
