Police locate sexual predator from Canada in Seattle
SEATTLE -- U.S. Marshals and the Seattle Police Department said they have located a high-risk and sexually violent predator in downtown Seattle on Thursday. Authorities had been informed that Michael Stanley, 48, may be in the area.
Stanley had removed his GPS bracelet in Canada and fled to Washington state on Oct. 7. Canadian officials refused to extradite Stanley and local police were put on alert.
Stanley is a U.S. citizen and has a criminal history in the U.S. and Canada. He is not currently wanted for any crimes in the U.S., but Canadian officials have classified him as a repeat sex offender and is considered to be a high risk to reoffend.
Police are not able to arrest Stanley due to the fact that he has not committed a crime in the U.S., but Seattle police have asked him to register as a sex offender in Washington, allowing them to supervise him. Stanley could be arrested if he fails to register as a sex offender in the state.
