Hundreds of Washington state workers furloughed over shutdown

unemploymentOLYMPIA — More than 400 state workers were furloughed Tuesday and another 450 had their hours reduced because of the federal government shutdown, the state Employment Security Department said.

The ESD, which processes unemployment claims, gets about 87 percent of its funding from the federal government, the Seattle Times said.

Sheryl Hutchison, a spokeswoman for the agency, told the Times that because of the federal shutdown, 418 state workers were furloughed and another 450 had their hours reduced.

The ESD is using state funds to pay the staff needed to keep processing unemployment claims. As the Times point out, the furloughed state workers ironically will now have to file for unemployment benefits from the same agency that furloughed them.

This is the Republican way of doing things. People, staff and employees are expendable.

If the democrats would work with and not against rhem then maybe we could have avoided this.
I mean our president will negotiate with Syria, Egypt, Lybia and Russia but not his own people? That’s not right son.

Remember Democrats and Obama said they won't negotiate and that they want this shutdown to hurt everyday people.

If anything this shutdown is showing me is how many people are on the federal teet! No wonder they have so much local power to dictate to states they pay them off. I am so surprised about how much WE DON"T NEED most of these federal workers. Talk about a bloated work force.

The biggest problem is that the government has always spent more than it has. especially the current and previous administration Bush 2 was about a 6T increase in two terms O is at about 6T and counting…. At some point this has to stop… And both parties are to blame…. If any one Tries to blame one party you need to pull your head out and actually look around.
