Five-day razor clam dig starts Friday

OLYMPIA -- Four Washington beaches will be open for a five-day razor clam dig on Friday, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The department made the announcement on Wednesday. The evening dig would be the second of the fall season. Officials said all four beaches were tested for toxins and that razor clams from those locations were considered safe to eat.

Dates, locations and evening low tides for the digs are:

Oct. 4, Friday, 6:56 PM: 0.0 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks
Oct. 5, Saturday, 7:36 PM; -0.4 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks
Oct. 6, Sunday, 8:17 PM; -0.7 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks
Oct. 7, Monday, 9:00 PM; -0.8 feet; Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks
Oct. 8, Tuesday, 9:48 PM; -0.7 feet; Twin Harbors

The Department of Fish and Wildlife said diggers should arrive an hour or two early for the best results. Harvesters are not allowed to take more than 15 razor clams and the first 15 must be kept, regardless of size or condition. State officials said diggers age 15 and older must have a 2013-14 fishing license to dig razor clams on any beach.

Another dig has been tentatively scheduled for Oct. 17-22, although department officials said that depends on marine toxin tests. An announcement on future digs was expected later in the month.
