Statewide impacts of possible federal government shutdown
OLYMPIA -- Gov. Jay Inslee plans to address the media at 2:30 p.m. today to discuss statewide impacts of a possible federal government shutdown Tuesday.
In a statement sent this morning, the governor plans to also address implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
If Congress cannot reach a budget deal by midnight, tens of thousands of civilian military employees would be put on furlough and not paid. The hardest hit would be the Puget Sound Naval Station in Bremerton and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Regular military members would still work, but could expect delayed paychecks.
The US Postal Service is not affected, so you can expect your mail to be delivered. Low- to moderate-income families trying to get a government backed home loan could face problems.
The Employment Security Department posted an alert on its website for anyone who is receiving, or is about to sign up for unemployment benefits. A spokesperson said if the government shutdown lasted past next Tuesday, Oct. 8, they would begin shutting down operations and people would not receive their unemployment checks.
All National Parks and federal museums would be closed if a budget deal is not reached.
