5 hikers killed in rock slide in Colorado

mapNATHROP, Colo. — Five hikers trapped in a rock slide in central Colorado were found dead Monday, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office told the Denver Post.

It is not clear whether the five are family or friends, the Post said. A 13-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble by first responders and flown to Children’s Hospital in Denver, about 123 miles northeast of the site, but her condition was not immediately known.

The group of hikers were caught in the rock slide about 11 a.m. Monday near Mount Princeton in Chaffee County, the Post said.

Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer told media some of the rocks involved in the slide are “half the size of a car.”
