Head coach Pete Carroll addressed the media this afternoon ahead of the team's 1:45 p.m. PT "Competition Wednesday" practice and preparation for Sunday's Week 4 road contest against the Houston Texans (2-1) at Reliant Stadium.

Carroll announced the signing of free agent center Jason Spitz to fill the roster spot vacated yesterday by the release of defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith. Spitz, listed at 6-foot-3 and 298 pounds, last played in 2011 for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Carroll said rookie defensive tackle Jordan Hill (biceps) will practice in a limited fashion on Wednesday, but his status heading into this weekend's game against the Texans is still a question mark. Hill, the team's third-round draft pick back in April, has been sidelined for more than a month after he injured his biceps during practice back on August 20.

Several players will be held out of practice Wednesday with the hope of returning later in the week. Topping that list are wide receiver Jermaine Kearse (ankle) and defensive end Red Bryant (back spasms). Carroll said he's crossing his fingers with the hope that Kearse will be ready to go this weekend, while Bryant is expected to return to practice on Thursday and be available for Sunday's game.
