SEATTLE -- Two young men were arrested Wednesday night after they were caught spray-painting the iconic Jimi Hendrix statue on Capitol Hill, Seattle police said.
Police were called to the Jimi Hendrix statue in the 1600 block of Broadway Avenue around 8 p.m. Wednesday, with reports of two drunk men spray-painting the statue. When officers arrived, the men had left, but police gathered information from local witnesses.
According to information gathered, two men, 20 and 21, entered a nearby store and purchased spray paint right before leaving the store and tagging Jimi. The men then left the statue but continued to tag nearby construction equipment and a building, before boarding a Metro bus, The men allegedly spray-painted the bus as the got of in the area of 8th Avenue and Olive Way, and continued their stream of havoc as they made their way downtown.
The Metro bus driver was able to photograph the men, and police compiled the bus driver's photographs and video footage from a store to identify the men. A King County Metro Transit Police Officer spotted the two sometime before midnight around 3rd and Pike. They allegedly had paint on their hands, and were positively identified as the suspects who sprayed the Jimi statue.
They were booked into the King County Jail for investigation of property damage.
The Jimi statue was cleaned early Thursday.
