Rogue fliers target Portland neighbors on food stamps

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) – Homeowners in a southeast Portland neighborhood were upset to find a note on their front doors Monday morning that singled out people collecting food stamps.

The note reads:

“Dear Reader of This Note,

There are twenty seven people in this neighborhood who vote and receive food stamps. The names of these people are being posted where they can be seen by taxpayers and the neighborhood can decide who is truly in need of food.

River Gibeaut was out walking his dog this morning when he found the notes on his neighbor’s porches.

Fliers“The weaker people in our society, a good culture takes care of them, they don’t degrade them,” Gibeaut said.

“To just use a broad brush and put every single person’s name up there without really investigating any of the situations, I don’t think that’s right,” neighbor Lauren Davidson said.

This is the second time in a month that letters like this have been found on neighborhood doorsteps. Last month, a letter signed with the same name, targeted people with disabilities. In that letter, the author suggested that receiving benefits makes people with disabilities a threat to the Republic.

“I think it’s messed up and an invasion of privacy that’s really nobody’s business,” Davidson said.

The mayor’s office says they are tracking the fliers and hope to find the person or people responsible.

So far, there’s no indication where the letters came from. City officials are now calling on the public to help them find the person responsible.

Portland Police say they would like to talk to the person responsible for posting the flyers, but they said it’s not likely this person has committed a crime.
