Part of Nickelsville on the move
SEATTLE - Residents of Nickelsville, the homeless encampment, are packing up and moving. The Seattle City Council set a Sunday deadline for residents to move out, to at least three other location, the Seattle Times reported. Nickelsville has been the largest homeless encampment in Seattle since 2008, named after the then - Mayor Greg Nickels. The encampment served as a community and a political statement since then, moving all over town.
The encampment's current location, in the 7100 block of West Marginal Way Southwest, includes goats, chickens, a little barn, a tent of donated clothes, portable toilets, picnic tables and a cooking area. It has been a community of homeless people living in tents, homemade plywood-and-tarp structures, on pallets and in small sheds, the Times reported.
The Seattle City Council signed a contract with the Union Gospel Mission to help Nickelsville residents find housing, the paper reported. The locations for Nickelsville residents to move are: 20th Avenue South and South Jackson Street in the Central District; another in Skyway, the third, an undisclosed location.
Nickelsville's Facebook page: Nickelsville Works is asking for volunteers to help with the encampment's move. Among the items requested: cash donations and a forklift (to move the portable pottys).
