The team also released kicker Carson Wiggs and signed defensive tackle Dewayne Cherrington.
Sanford was originally signed by Cleveland as an undrafted free agent on May 17, 2010. He spent his three seasons in Cleveland between the practice squad and the active roster, playing in six games, recording five tackles during 2011 in five games played. His 2012 season was cut short after playing in one game before being placed on injured reserve (knee) on November 2.
Cherrington originally signed with New England as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2013, but was released on June 10. He played in 13 games in 2012 for Mississippi State and notched 24 tackles (13 solo).
Moffitt was drafted by Seattle with the 11th pick of the third round (75th overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft. He started six of eight games played in 2012 after starting the first nine games of his rookie season in 2011 before landing on injured reserve (knee) on November 15, 2011.
Wiggs signed with Seattle on January 31, 2013.
John Clayton of ESPN said in a tweet: “The John Moffitt trade indicates JR Sweezy and Paul McQuistan have the lead for the starting guards for Seattle.”
