Pregnant Sammamish native, newlywed husband killed in crash

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A pregnant schoolteacher from Sammamish and her newlywed husband died Sunday in a North Carolina car crash.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, William Reid, 26, and Jamie Soukup Reid, 25, were killed when their hired driver lost control of his car while taking the couple to the airport.

The couple had been married less for than three months. They had met in an education master's program at the University of Pennsylvania and were attending a friend's wedding Asheville last weekend.

Soukup Reid, who grew up in Sammamish, taught 7th graders at a Philadelphia charter school. She worked as an intern at the The Issaquah Press in 2007. Her father told the paper she was set to begin her forth year of teaching later this month.

“She had the ultrasound pictures in her purse,” Mr. Soukup told The Issaquah Press. “We lost our two kids and our first grandchild.

Reid grew up in Phillipsburg N.J. and worked as a teacher at a different charter school in Philadelphia. According to the New York Daily News, his last request was for rescuers to save Jamie first. He didn't know she had died instantly in the wreck. He died from his injuries at the hospital later that day.

“As horrible as it was to hear, it doesn’t surprise me to know what (he said) in those few minutes he was awake,” Reid’s mom, Anne, told the Daily News on Wednesday. “They lived for one another — up until the end.”
