BAKER CITY, Ore. (KPTV — Two NASCAR racing cars were damaged by fire Friday when a trailer tire overheated and caught fire on Interstate 84 near Baker City.

Oregon State Police said flames spread from the tire to the trailer as 51-year-old John Wood, from Idaho, pulled into the Baker Valley Rest Area around 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters soon responded to put out the fire, but not before two cars inside the trailer were damaged.

The flames caused extensive damage to the trailer, and one car sustained significant damage and the other car had windshield and front-end damage.

Troopers said the cars were heading to a NASCAR event in Monroe, Wash., home of Evergreen Speedway.

A total damage estimate wasn’t immediately available.

Evergreen Speedway is hosting the NAPA Auto Parts 150 and the Genie Can-Am 125 this weekend.
