BREAKING: Duvall police officer shot

Officials work to ease concerns over bus safety

SEATTLE — A shooting on board a King County Metro bus sent a bus driver to the hospital and left two passengers slightly injured as they tried to escape from harm Monday morning.

The shooting happened during the height of the morning commute. That same afternoon, County Executive Dow Constantine, issued a public statement declaring that the transit system in King County is safe and this shooting was an isolated incident.

Constantine said, “The transit system is safe. The drivers who deliver hundreds of thousands of folks to their destinations every day are remarkably dedicated. I hope the next time you board a bus you will take a moment to thank your metro driver.”

metro bus shootingThis morning we will speak with commuters about the incident and talk about their faith in the transit system. We will have more on those responses later today.

The transit system is not safe..Whether it be the other passengers or the buses themselves.

For example, yesterday, I sat next to 2 people on the bus who discussed, openly, their plans to rob a store, break into several houses, and break into storage units.. I've been approached at transit center stops and asked for Meth.. I have twice been on the bus as it pulled into Renton transit center, only to see the area roped off with crime scene tape, once after someone was stabbed to death for their cellphone. These are just a few examples of the "fun" experience of riding our transit system. This happens all the time, since many times, police release recently detained and processed criminals at transit centers (don't believe me? spend some time at Kent/Auburn/Renton transit centers..)

As to the buses..most of the time, many of these same passengers, when they aren't begging you for money, attempting to rob you or each other or plot crimes, are dis-assembling the bus in some fashion, i.e. removing screws…ripping apart seat covers, cutting up seats/graphitti in the bus….multiple times i have gotten in a seat, and been snagged on a half removed screw that's sticking out.. Often food wrappers, beer bottles/cans and assorted other trash are crammed into the cushions/backs of seats. And the seats themselves often look like the floor of a frat house after a drinking party. Its pretty obvious the buses are never cleaned.. I got off the bus one day last week and there was a half empty beer bottle crammed in the back of one of the seats…it was waiting there the next morning as i got on the same bus..

I have also physically held the window in place a couple of times, as the bus went around a corner and the large, "non-opening unless its an emergency" window i was seated next too, flung itself open..Apparently safety checks on the window latches are never done as well. Luckily for the woman who was leaning against it, I caught the window before she toppled out onto the freeway..

Most of the time your best 'defense' at one of our lovely bus stops/on our buses is to pretend you cant see or hear anything and trying to not sit in someones stains they have left on the seats..
