Man saves dog from sinking ship, leaves wife behind

SEATTLE -- A South African man is in the doghouse after saving his pooch from his sinking yacht, leaving his wife waiting for rescue.

According to the Herald Sun, Graham Anley wrecked his boat in treacherous waters off the town of Cebe on South Africa’s Transkei coast. Anley radioed in a distress call, activated the boat’s emergency beacon, and then grabbed his Jack Russell terrier Rosie and began to swim for shore.

But Graham’s wife Sheryl was still on the ship, her life jacket and safety line snagged on the boat’s steering gear.

With Rosie safely on shore, Graham returned to the boat and freed his wife.

The paper reports that Anley, a sea rescue volunteer, used his cell phone to alert authorities that they had made it to the beach. All three were airlifted to a nearby sea rescue base.
