Cops cracking down on drivers using cell phones

SEATTLE -- Using your cell phone while driving is even more ill-advised during the month of August. City, county and state law enforcement officers are conducting extra patrols this month to target distracted drivers.

The Washington State Patrol warns that it only takes a fraction of a second for a driver's inattention to turn tragic. The average text takes your attention away from driving for 4.6 seconds and can be compared to driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed, according to troopers.

Distracted drivers pulled over by a law enforcement officer face a $124 fine.
