Bear cub spotted in children's playground area of Monroe park

MONROE -- A lone bear cub was spotted running across the children's playground in Monroe's Rainier View Park on Tuesday.

A Puget Sound Energy worker spotted the cub at 1:45 p.m. in the park, the Monroe Police Department said. The cub then climbed over a chain link fence and ran across Chain Lake Road into a wooded area, the department said.

Monroe's animal control officer looked for the cub, and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife was notified.

The cub was the only bear observed in the area.
