PORT TOWNSEND — Should the Port Townsend School Board change the high school’s Redskins team name because some consider it racially insensitive?

The School Board may decide at its meeting Monday night whether to change the name and mascot, the Peninsula Daily News reported. The public comment period at the board’s meeting is expected to begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a possible decision by the board,  the newspaper said.

An eight-member committee studied the issue and submitted a report to the School Board on June 10 and found that the name should be changed.

Former basketball player John Stroeder, a 1976 Port Townsend High School graduate who played for the Milwaukee Bucks before returning to live, has threatened to take his jersey from the school’s display cabinet and cut all ties should the name be changed, the newspaper said.

Stroeder  told the Peninsula Daily News last Thursday that he would attend the meeting and would “possibly” make good on the threat to remove his memorabilia from the case if the name is changed.

“This is political,” he told the newspaper.

Racism is the pride n joy in americas history. Its not bad enough the us army murdered 100'000'000 natives but the american society has to continually dehumanize the decentants of the survivors of the worst genocide in history.

The English language changes throughout history, this name has been used in a positive way for 80 years, It is part of our towns rich history which has been slowly being replaced by other people that that move in and take over. Isn't that a repeat of what we did to the native americans by forcing there way upon others, It wasn't many years that the word "GAY" ment happy, meri, joyus. now it is a term meaning homosexual, the word redskin was used first by the English just to identify native Americans like white which you see on most Job apps and survays, redskin was later used in a nagitive way, this push to change the name is only making the word ugly, I have Native American blood and would gladly take that name, if anything to show the world how great our race is. by changeing the name makes it an exceptable ugly word, and bad people will use it as such.

OK, since the Native Blood that runs in me isn't enough to count my opinion is simple, the only one's that should have a vote in this matter are the Native Americans. If they want it changed then it gets changed, if they don't have a problem then it stays as is. The bottom line is that the worthless liberals want to put their noses into everything, and that needs to stop.

I have a perfect name for the Port Townsend team that won't (hopefully) offend anyone. Name the team: The Port Townsend Team. That should do it!!! No humans, animals, fish or birds will be offended. Problem solved!!

Better yet, lets dissolve Port Townsend School District 50, The Chimacum Cowboys still have there History and honor, even yet change the Town name to (Bairley Able Achers) for the transplanted old retired california snobs

I agree with three of the comments above. The only reason this is an issue is that liberals want to carry on a political agenda over everything. I am part Native American and the majority of Native Americans have too many other real issues to worry about, like losing our young people to alcoholism and addiction or how to make new opportunities for our young ones or how to take care of our elderly. Those are real issues that need to be addressed. We aren’t offended by having a sports team names after us. It’s actually a compliment that they thought our culture brave and strong enough to want to emulate it. Don’t we have better things to spend our limited time and money toward.

I do consider all of the concepts you’ve presented for your post. They’re very convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too short for novices. May just you please lengthen them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
