SEATTLE -- The city's second bicycle counter is now operating on Spokane Street on the east side of the West Seattle Bridge.

The bicycle counter was turned on Thursday afternoon and has already logged more than 400 cyclists.

The Fremont Bridge bike counter has been keeping tabs on cyclists crossing between Fremont and Queen Anne since October 2012. Since the counter became operational, it has recorded more than 538,000 people riding across the bridge.

The counters help the city gather data about bike traffic that can be used to improve its Bicycle Master Plan.

Funding for the counter comes from the Cascade Bicycle Club and the Mark & Susan Torrance Foundation.
