City trying to find source of stink in creek
SEATTLE -- It's not exactly the kind of report one likes to hear about their neighborhood creek.
According to Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle's Thorton Creek has a high amount of human fecal bacteria present in its waterway.
The creek runs through roughly 700 King County backyards, the Seattle PI reported, and somewhere along the line sewage is seeping into the creek. The study, funded by the Washington Department of Ecology, collected samples at 45 sites on the watershed. Officials believe the creek is finding and carrying fecal matter from "illicit sewage imports," the P.I. reported, or from creek-side camps.
Thorton Creek is 18 miles long and drains into Lake Washington. Many who lived along were not surprised by the findings.
"It always smelled bad," Rico Aguirre of Lake City Way told the P.I.
Officials have not yet release a plan to deal with the fecal matter in the creek.
