MONTREAL -- A 38-year-old volunteer track worker at the Canadian Grand Prix was killed Sunday night when he was accidentally run over by a mobile crane carting a wrecked race car off the track, The Gazette of Montreal reported.

The worker was a 10-year veteran who was one of two men escorting the crane that was hoisting a Sauber car that had hit the wall in Turn 2.

The Gazette said the fatal accident occurred after the worker stumbled as he was picking up a radio that dropped to the ground. The crane operator didn’t see him fall and continued driving, rolling over the worker.

The victim was conscious at first, but died at the hospital, officials said.

The man is the third Grand Prix track worker to have been killed since 2000, according to Autosport, which is an authority on Formula One news.
