Seattle woman attempts to live on sunlight, water

SEATTLE — A few rare plants can live on exclusively sunlight, water and air. But a human? One Seattle woman is trying to find out.

Navenna Shine, the founder and subject of the Living on Light experiment, plans to spend the next four to six months abstaining from food of any kind and living on only light, water and tea.

According to her website Livingonlight.co, Shine started the experiment in an attempt to follow a group of obscure Yogis, who for thousands of years have claimed the ability to live on light. Some who adhere to such practices are called “breatharians,” — someone who gains energy and sustenance strictly through air and sunshine — and Shine hopes to prove it is possible by living out the experiment.

While difficult, Shine hopes the body can be trained to live through the hardships of surviving without food.

“The only way to prove it is by doing it,” Shine said.

Shine said she is not completely sure she will be able to succeed, but intends to give the experiment a fair attempt. Throughout the experiment, she will film herself on eight cameras positioned throughout her house to ensure to herself and others she does not cheat.

“Can I do this?” Shine asked. “Will I succeed? I don’t know the answer to this because I haven’t done it yet. I only know that I shall not cheat. I want to know this as much as you do. Time will tell the rest.”

Shine called her attempt a “huge moment in history.”

According to Shine’s Facebook page, she was in her 32nd day without food Wednesday. She has lost more than 20 pounds since the experiment started, and in her most recent most post, described how her body has used up all its fat and is looking for other sources of energy.

“I have the feeling that my body has reached a point where it has used up all its stored fats and is now looking around for what next to consume,” Shine wrote. “I suspect this might be the point where it decides either to find and hook into the source where it is able to live on Light, or consume the body for sustenance. I am doing all I can thorough consciousness to open up the space for ‘Living on Light.’ We shall see.”

As many as four “Breatharians” have died while attempting to live solely on light, the website Seattleglobalist.com reported.

Is it still natural selection if she's beyond child-bearing age? I suppose not.

Memetics shows how ideas, amongst cognitively capable animals, behaves in an organic way. If nothing else, her retardation will cease it's spread through the general population.

Letting just any moron have access to mass communications…worst thing we've done since Hitler.

…btw, there's your internet hitler reference for today. You're welcome.

At what point does something like this suggest that one is not in one's right mind and that the "authorities" should intervene. This is suicide by small margins each day. If she has actually exhausted all fat stores the body will begin consuming muscle mass…that includes her heart. At 32 days, she is within about a week or so of death. This woman is a complete nutter and somone really does need to call in APS

It never ceases to amaze me at the level of ignorance people are able to achieve in this day and age. I can only assume willful denial with a healthy dose of wishful thinking.

Her family or Elder Care Services for the State should step in and place her on a psychiatric hold. She will die under the circumstances she poses and needs to be evaluated….

There's a show [The Human Body - Brain Power] on the Discovery Channel that shows how this one guy who was trapped in a underground cave and survived for a month without food, but just by drinking water from the cave.

Yes, but that water has sediments and nutrients dissolved in it. While I'm sure that he didn't get much caloric intake from it, he was still able to nourish his body in some state without irreparatively damaging his kidneys.

He didn't try to spontaneously develop photosynthesis.

The body needs food, that is a proven fact. She says her body has already used up all its fat deposits, and is "looking for other sources" of sustenance. Light is not a source of sustenance, unless you're a cabbage. Of course, if (god or anything else forbid) her body starts cannibalizing its own heart muscle and nervous system (which happens quite often in severe starvation victims), she may well end up being SOME kind of vegetable.

And she'll STILL need to eat!

Have to remember what it listed that she was going to be consuming:

Tea is the scammer one. What tea? What will be in the tea? See where this leads? For all we know that "tea" could be a nutrient cocktail that gets her through that 6 months. This isnt some sort of scientific experiment with controls in place. Its a nutjob scammer.

If the tea is even sweetened, that could prolong her stay considerably.

She chose this. I say let her continue. Even if she will die it should be her choice. Her idiotic choice but hers none the less.

Agreed. And it would be nice if she had the courtesy to record and release the footage of her death, so the world can have graphic, definitive closure to one clownish conspiracy.

Where are the 24 hour video monitors watching her from every angle to see if in fact she never eats anything. I am sure it is available for the public to view for it is the about the only way you could prove this not a fraud.

Surely this question has been answered? With famine prevalent in the African continent, surely she need only look at literally millions of examples of people starving from lack of food but an abundance of sunlight?

Where is the other half of this story q13? Is it really responsible news reporting to draw attention to this woman's "quasi scientific experiment" without discussion the real science behind anorexia and skin cancer?! This is not a new experiment and it doesn't end with positive results…

This isnt a controlled scientific experiment. Light water tea. Ok. What's the tea comprised of(a vitamin rich nutrient cocktail that for all intent and purposes is "food"? Who 24/7 ensures she doesn't sneak other foods or such, and is said person trustworthy as well. She's either a lunatic or a scammer looking to grab a buck and notoriety. This sort of thing has been debunked before and with just a little bit of effort this should be too.

She's a classic attention seeker. She admits her "experiment" has no scientific validity outright. She wants you to watch and all of us who have commented have fed the beast. I'm rather ashamed of myself now.

What are those who are close to the woman doing to gently deal with her obvious wider issues and to force the collision between reality and fantsy to a head before she dies?

One just has to ask "why" one would even both to attempt this. Few of us would willingly last 72 hours drinking only water before we'd demand some more solid food, fruit joices, pudding, broth, soup, something to give our muscles the needed protein, and to aid our body actually digest more food later on. This is a foolish, foolhardy, and pointless exercise in willful ignorance of how our human bodies work. I question how and why this person got to this desperate state in her life where she finds such nonsense a plausible strategy. When she becomes unconscious, unable to respond to others, will medical intervention be ordered? Will the intervention work? Will she ever regain a sound mind and body after an assault as brazen as this, 30+ days on only water? Or will our society allow her to die carrying out her misguided plan? I have to wonder and only hope she can survive and recover. Stupid

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's because she is old, retired, and bored beyond understanding. If I were old and retired, you better believe I could find stuff to do other than challenging the way things work.

Umm, your body won't "hook into the source" because you are are not a plant you dumbass. Have fun feeling your body consume your heart muscles as you die a more than likely very painful death.

There have been no double blind and controlled test performed to confirm ANY animal can live of sunlight and water alone.

Neither is the 3-3-3 rule of course, that is approximately 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food => You die, but I'd still prefer not to take the risk.

Glad we now have a volunteer.

You know, to really sell this Breatharian thing, proponents need to come up with alcoholic air; all the intoxication with none of the calories and no hangovers, wouldn’t that be wonderful!

Well, its lunch time here in Calgary. I am going out to grab me a slice of hot and zesty air. There is a field nearby that provides the finest, purest, freshest, and tastiest air in the country. It’s 100% organic!!! It’s all natural and finger licking good.

… and if you would like to buy some, I will mail you a full Ziploc bag for only $50, send your cash or money order to … act NOW! … supplies are limited!!! :)

Jocularly yours, Andrew Antaro in Canada.

In short, SEO can be a more or so complex process that can increase your websites and company’s visibility on the Internet, through popular search engines like google. Creating only one article of fine quality will benefit you much a lot more than ten that have mediocre material.
